Dr. Mark J. Ablowitz, born in New York, NY, first received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1967 and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971. He first joined the Faculty of Clarkson University in 1971, eventually becoming full Professor and serving as Chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from 1979-1985. Ablowitz was then Dean of Science at Clarkson from 1985 to 1989. Since then, he has been Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado at Boulder, serving as Chair until 2000.
Prof. Ablowitz was a Sloan Foundation Fellow from 1975-1977 and received the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1984. Among other honors, he was named a "Highly Cited" researcher by the ISI Web of Science in 2003 and Professor of Distinction in the College of Arts and Sciences at CU Boulder in 2006.
Prof. Ablowitz's research interests lie primarily in nonlinear systems but he is particularly well-known for his work on the "inverse scattering transform" to solve nonlinear equations. He is the author or coauthor of over 200 journal articles and more than 60 book chapters as of 2010, and is the coauthor of four books.
