James Raftery was born in Durban and studied at the former University of Natal,
where he obtained his PhD in Mathematics in 1988, under the supervision of
Teo Sturm. He was appointed to the Mathematics Department of Natal University
in 1986, where he became a Professor in 2002. In 1992, he was the recipient of
the Vice-Chancellor's Research Award for young researchers. Although his early
work concerned the theory of rings and modules, his current research interest is
the algebra of logic, including both the concrete and the abstract aspects of this
subject. His recent papers involve residuated structures, as well as the application
of universal algebraic methods to the general theory of deductive systems. He
became a member of the editorial board of the journal Algebra Universalis
in 2005 and was a guest co-editor of a special issue of Studia Logica in 2006.
He has supervised eight postgraduate dissertations, four of them at PhD level.
He has had several visiting positions at universities in the United States
and Canada, most frequently at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
