This list of honorary doctorate recipients dates back to 1968 when the first award was made by the former University of Port Elizabeth (UPE). The former PE Technikon awarded honorary doctoral degrees from 2002 to 2005. From 2006 onwards, the honorary degrees were awarded by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and then from 2017 to date, awards were made by Nelson Mandela University. The links on each name reveal the citation of the recipient as it appeared in the graduation programme at the time.
The recipient of an honorary degree may include it on their Curriculum Vitae provided it is listed under awards and honours and not under the section for qualifications. Whenever the title ‘Dr’ is used in the case of an Honorary Doctorate, the abbreviations ‘h.c.’ (honoris causa) should be used against their name or the recipient should state ‘Honorary Degree’ in full against their name, for example, Dr ABC (h.c.) or Dr ABC (Honorary Degree).
