Biography
In this position, he oversees the university’s financial strategy, budgeting, reporting and compliance frameworks. His work ensures that the University maintains sound financial management practices in support of institutional growth and transformation.
Recognised for his integrity, strategic insight and deep institutional knowledge, Monaghan contributes to senior executive decision-making, institutional governance and robust financial systems. His leadership has been instrumental in strengthening financial accountability and sustainability at Nelson Mandela University, ensuring that resources are managed effectively in support of the University’s mission of advancing knowledge and societal impact through prudent and responsible stewardship of its financial resources.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the former University of Port Elizabeth – now Nelson Mandela University - and a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Accounting from the University of South Africa.
Monaghan’s professional career started in the auditing profession where he completed his articles before gaining experience in the private sector. He later joined the higher education sector and became part of the finance team at Nelson Mandela University in 2000. Over more than two decades of service to the institution, he has progressed through several senior finance roles. He was appointed Executive Director: Finance in 2016, following a period of serving in the role in an acting capacity.
