COVID-19 update: Useful vaccination information

10/12/2021

As COVID-19 transmission numbers surge across the country (22391 new cases were reported yesterday), and our University prepares to close for end-of-year recess, please take note of the following:
  • Mandela University’s Vaccination Centre will close at 11am on Wednesday, 15 December, and reopen on 3 January.
  • Students will be able to vaccinate at all clinics across the University’s Gqeberha campuses from 11 January 2022. Additional information will be shared in the new year.
  • George Campus remains an outreach site for the Department of Health, with weekly vaccination opportunities.
  • Plans are also in place to make vaccination available for those students who come to campus to register (for the most part, however, students will register online) next year.
  • Vaccination for those aged 12 to 17 has changed from the one Pfizer jab only, to two shots. The second shot can be taken 42 days after the first.
    • Individuals with a compromised immune system are now also eligible for an additional dose as part of their primary vaccine schedule to enhance immune protection. More information will follow in the
year new. In the interim, please liaise directly with your medical practitioner who is integral in identifying who is eligible and where you can get the booster vaccination.

University’s stance on vaccinations
While Nelson Mandela University acknowledges the right of every individual to vaccinate or not, it strongly advocates every staff member and student to vaccinate for their own good and that of others. It is our greatest defence against the pandemic and will significantly contribute to fostering a safer campus environment for all.

The University will also constantly monitor and verify the vaccination status of students and staff. Students, for example, will be asked to upload their vaccination certificate at registration. Furthermore, during the year and depending on directives from the national government and the Department of Higher Education and Training, we will adjust our strategy if needed.
