Cheers as Mandela University starts vaccination rollout

15/06/2021

There were cheers all round yesterday when the vaccine arrived at the start of Nelson Mandela University’s vaccination rollout to staff in the 60-plus age group as part of Phase 2 of the COVID-19 vaccination national programme.

Qualifying staff were alerted late on Friday that they could take advantage of the opportunity to be vaccinated at their place of employ after the Eastern Cape Department of Health approved the institution as a Master Facility COVID-19 vaccination site.

Yesterday, 66 people were vaccinated – 32 staff members and 34 members of the public – and many more staff are expected today after the smooth hosting of the vaccination process. For more, see staff reaction to the University’s vaccination efforts on Staff Bulletin.

The institution is one of first in the higher education sector to offer the vaccine to both its own staff and students and members of the public.

The COVID-19 Vaccination Centre with its 10 stations is open from 8.30am to 3pm weekdays for those who are registered on the national Electronic Vaccination Data System. To get a sense of what to expect watch the short COVID-19 vaccination journey video.

George Campus expects to receive its accreditation from the Western Cape Department of Health in the near future.
