Supporting Learning and Teaching during Covid-19 Alert Level 4

08/07/2021

In line with applicable regulations during the period of Adjusted Level 4, the University has recalibrated some of its plans in a bid to minimise the impact on learning, teaching, research and engagement.

Access to Online resources

Wi-fi access is available to all students living on-campus.  The ICT Services team continues to densify Wi-fi coverage in learning and teaching spaces, general areas, and on campus residences.

60 accredited off-campus residences are now connected directly to the University network with an additional 20 to be connected in 2021.  This on-going project has resulted in improved internet connectivity to the students staying in these residences.  The list of these connected residences can be found at https://ocho.mandela.ac.za/Off-campus-connectivity. ICT Services is assisting these residences where possible to ensure adequate distribution of this connectivity via their Wi-Fi network.

Challenges with connectivity on campus should be reported to the ICT Helpdesk via https://studentrequests.mandela.ac.za or by calling 041 504 3000.

PCs in Residences

Desktop computers at Gqeberha Campuses and the George Campus are available for placement in common areas of residences across the University.  The Residence Managers, working with ICT Services, will finalise the deployment.  Students are urged to be considerate in utilisation of the limited stations.

Quarantine Sites

Residences and spaces designated as quarantine sites will be equipped with the necessary connectivity and resources to support students.  In keeping with the spirit of #SaveLives, students in quarantined residences are reminded to observe health protocols and follow all guidelines.

Student Laptops

Following on the successful student laptop scheme that has resulted in over 10,000 students receiving new laptops in the period 2019-2021, the University continues to seek solutions in assisting students get access to devices.  At the beginning of the 2021 academic year, 1518 First Time Entry (FTEN) students funded by NSFAS received laptops.

Students without a suitable learning device are encouraged to register online using the link https://forms.mandela.ac.za/DeviceOptIn/login.aspx by Monday, 12 July 2021.  Students are reminded to familiarise themselves with the terms and conditions attached to the online form.

The University provided data to registered students during the month of July 2021.  Students are reminded to ensure that the correct cellular number is registered. Students can update their information using the link https://webapps.mandela.ac.za/changeofdetails/.
