Syllabus

PURPOSE

To equip learners with scientifically-based Business Management knowledge which will enable them to establish, manage and grow their own small business enterprises.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• To have a complete comprehension of Business Management, identifying hereby the value of this subject in managing enterprises and the crucial role of entrepreneurship in this context.
• To understand the business environment in which all business enterprises operate and how the different environmental variables impact on the daily management of a business.
• To gain insights into the very important issue of entrepreneurship. It is important to gain knowledge of the nature of entrepreneurship, the importance of entrepreneurship, the entrepreneurial process, entrepreneurial behaviour and intrapreneurship.
• To gain insight into the establishment, operations and challenges of small business enterprises by discussing their nature and importance as well as selected establishment issues. Specifically, the various start-up options, the feasibility and viability studies as well as setting up a business plan are highlighted. The specific challenges facing small business enterprise as well as the sources of assistance available to them are also presented.
• To gain insight into the different forms of business enterprise available to entrepreneurs, as well as the statutory requirements governing the establishment and management of business enterprises in South Africa.
• To understand the basic reasons for a business enterprise’s existence by examining its strategic business intentions, generally communicated via its vision and mission statements, and its key values and business goals.
• To gain insight and knowledge into all the variables which will determine a firm’s field of business and to have a thorough understanding of all the competitive strategies available to firms.
• To gain insight into the importance of location and layout planning as well as the different location and layout factors applicable to manufacturing concerns, retail enterprises, service rendering firms and wholesale enterprises.
• To understand the development and growth of business enterprises and the various directions in which growth can take place, either internally or externally.
• To gain insight into business ethics in the workplace.
