Syllabus

PURPOSE
The overall module objective is to integrate the theoretical and practical components of financial planning by solving multi-dimensional problems through a case study approach to advanced real life financial planning scenarios. The module comprises a practical application of the modules EBF401, EBF402 and EBF403. An advanced application of one of the core skills of the financial planning profession is the ability to analyse a client’s needs and objectives in a holistic manner within the financial planning process, the regulatory process and financial planning environment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completion of the module, learners should be able to apply critical thinking and solve advanced complex case studies through appropriate decision making incorporating knowledge gained in the broad knowledge domains of financial planning as undertaken in the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning programme including:

  • Principles and Practices of Financial Planning;
  • Financial Management;
  • Asset Management;
  • Risk Management;
  • Tax Planning;
  • Retirement Planning;
  • Estate Planning.

In terms of the Financial Planning Standards Board requirements for Financial Planning professionals, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding (including critical understanding of theories and principles) of the practice of financial planning;
  • apply advanced knowledge and understanding, and devise recommendations, sustain opinions and solve problems, that indicate a professional approach to the practice of financial planning;
  • collect, analyse and synthesise appropriate data to develop strategies and make judgments and recommendations that take into consideration relevant social, scientific, legal or ethical issues;
  • communicate and present information, ideas, problems and solutions on financial planning matters to both specialist and non-specialist audiences;
  • analyse a client’s needs and objectives, and develop strategies, recommendations and financial plans for clients using real-world scenarios.

CORE CONTENT
The learner will be exposed to a range of advanced financial planning case studies related to real life scenarios to develop the critical knowledge and practical skills to develop financial plans for clients.

 

Evaluation criteria

1 x 4½-hour examination, 30% class mark + 70% examination mark.
