Syllabus

PURPOSE

This module will prepare students to:
• Identify the tasks and responsibilities of the financial manager;
• Understand the overall impact of the business environment on financial decision-making;
• Gain knowledge, insight and understanding of relevant financial theories, with the objective inter alia to draw a line between good (or acceptable) and bad (or unacceptable) financial theories, as well as good and bad financial practices;
• Demonstrate knowledge and insight by adopting a systematic approach when analysing specific financial problems;
• Reinforce and extend the undergraduate syllabus, by inter alia a study of the financial literature in its broadest context;
• Stimulate active class participation on topical issues;
• Prepare assignments where the focus is on specific financial phenomena;
• Prepare solutions for the end-of-chapter problems, spreadsheet problems and mini-cases.

o Risk analysis and real options.
• Strategic financing decisions:
o Long-term financial planning.
o Capital structure decisions.

• Tactical financing decisions:
o Investment banking and financial restructuring.
o Lease financing.
o Hybrid financing.
• Working capital management:
o Current asset management.
o Short-term financing.
o Other topics in working capital management.
