Syllabus

 
PURPOSE
 
The overall purpose of this module is to equip learners with a more advanced knowledge of the theory and practice of entrepreneurship and small business management, which will enable them to establish, manage and grow their own small business enterprises.
 
LEARNING OUTCOMES
 
The module goal is to study the theory and practice of entrepreneurship at an advanced level.  More specifically, the learning outcomes are to:
 
Understand the nature and importance of the entrepreneurial method, mindset and process and have insight into the role of the entrepreneur in the economy as a potential job creator and initiator of growth and change.
Be aware of various trends and issues facing South African entrepreneurs.
Possess entrepreneurial skills and attributes and have the ability to apply these in their future career.
Understand and apply the principles of effectuation to their own personal lives and as potential entrepreneurs.
Think creatively and be aware of opportunities in the market and have the confidence to start a business.
Apply creative methodologies such as Design Thinking to opportunity recognition.
Understand the alternative routes to entrepreneurship, namely Social, Family and Corporate entrepreneurship.
Have the basic knowledge and training to conduct a feasibility and viability study, as well as have the ability to undertake business planning using relevant tools (i.e., Business plan and the Lean Model Canvas).
Possess the knowledge of the various types of financial, as well as individual and institutional support available to entrepreneurs.
 
PERFORMANCE OUTCOMES 
 
In respect of each module, students must be able to:
 
State essential content by describing/using basic concepts and principles in proper context.
Demonstrate the ability to relate theory and practice by completing and discussing, amongst others, worksheets, making presentations in class, case studies, starting a new business.
Generate new possibilities by solving case problems, completing assignments, to name a few examples.
 
METHODS
 
The module will accomplish the learning and performance outcomes through a diverse mix of methods and activities, including:
 
A healthy dose of PLAY if and when the Online Teams Platform allows for it.
A series of topics and discussions on entrepreneurship and enterprise development.
Analysis and discussion of actual cases.
Guest speaker presentations and dialogue.
Working in teams to prepare a start-up Lean Canvas (or business plan) and group research reports dealing with selected topics in Enterprise Development.
In-class assignments and exercises addressing contemporary issues in enterprise development and entrepreneurship.
Lectures and presentations.
Related readings and online videos.
Field work (most probably online interviews).
