Syllabus

PURPOSE

The overall outcome of this module is to equip students with scientifically based knowledge which will enable them to establish, manage and grow their own small business enterprises.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The learning outcomes for each study unit are outlined in the prescribed textbook. However, below are the general learning objectives and topics covered on this module:

• To gain insight on the concept of entrepreneurship and an introduction to the entrepreneur.
• To understand effectual entrepreneurship, its components and its benefits to entrepreneurship.
• To understand entrepreneurial opportunity recognition and application.
• To understand social entrepreneurship and its importance.
• To have an understanding of the skill set that an entrepreneur requires.
• To gain insight on entrepreneurial leadership and management.
• To understand the importance of networking in entrepreneurship.
• To know how creativity and innovation are driving forces of entrepreneurship and how it can be used in the entrepreneurial process.
• To understand the importance of setting business goals as an entrepreneur.
• To understand how to handle legal and other establishment issues in entrepreneurship.
• To gain insight on the importance of marketing and sales for entrepreneurs.
• To understand the basic financial skills needed in entrepreneurship.
• To understand production and operations management from an entrepreneurial perspective.

• Management and entrepreneurship: Introductory views, perspectives and models.
• Effectual Entrepreneurship, its dimensions and application.
• Identifying small business ideas, as well as identification, screening and application of business opportunities.
• Social entrepreneurship, its importance and different models to apply social entrepreneurship in practice.
• Basic financial planning and calculations.
• Choice of a form of business enterprise, the establishment procedure and general legal requirements.
• General and strategic management.
• Introduction to business functions such as Marketing, Finance and Operational Management.

100% Continuous assessment:

• 2x Semester tests (Final mark weight = 30%)
• 1x Assignment (Final mark weight = 20%)
• 5x Tutorials (Final mark weight = 10%)
• End of module assessment (Final mark weight = 40%)

Prerequisites

In order to achieve the above overall module outcome, it is imperative that learners be acquainted with the fundamentals of Business Management as well as the practical application of business knowledge as it relates to Entrepreneurship. This means that students will be introduced to a diverse range of issues relating to Entrepreneurship and Business Management, small enterprises and their environments, entrepreneurial actions and the establishment of enterprises.
