Faculty of Science (NMMU)

Vision: We strive to be a world-class Science Faculty, advancing our understanding of the world around us and helping to address the many needs of South Africa as well as the rest of Africa. We aim at all times for excellence in our teaching and research.

Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (NMMU)

The Department offers both Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as majors within a BSc degree programme. Postgraduate programmes in Mathematics up to PhD level are also offered by the department. There is a research team in Abstract Algebra with strong national and international links, and a Computational Applied Mathematics team is being developed.

A range of service Mathematics courses are also housed in the department. These include Mathematics courses for Engineering, Commerce, Education and Law students.

The members of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics are keenly aware of the need to improve mathematical expertise throughout the Eastern Cape, particularly amongst historically disadvantaged students. The department houses a number of projects for this purpose, including distance upgrading programmes for Mathematics Teachers in various centres, an annual Provincial Mathematics competition for learners and problem solving skills training workshops for teachers. South African Mathematical Society (SAMS)

The South African Mathematical Society was founded in 1957 and has the advancement of mathematics in South Africa as its main objective. We currently have a membership of more than 200.
The society's main activities include publication of the journal Quaestiones Mathematicae and Notices of the South African Mathematical Society. We organize an Annual Congress. We also represent (with AMESA) the interests of the mathematics community of the country on national and international structures.
The South African Mathematical Society is a national association of mathematicians, conscious of our African and international context as we seek to promote the discipline of mathematics in all its facets - locally, regionally and internationally. The society is committed to high standards of excellence in the learning, teaching and research of the discipline and strives to explore the applications of mathematics in addressing the needs of the South African society.

American Mathematical Society (AMS)

The AMS, founded in 1888 to further the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs, which

  • promote mathematical research, its communication and uses,
  • encourage and promote the transmission of mathematical understanding and skills,
  • support mathematical education at all levels,
  • advance the status of the profession of mathematics, encouraging and facilitating full participation of all individuals,
  • foster an awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life.

ASSOCIATIONS

Southern African Mathematical Sciences Association (SAMSA)

The aims of SAMSA are:

  • to promote cooperation and exchange of ideas in mathematical research and teaching of mathematics and to stimulate communication between mathematicians in the area
  • to organise research seminars and colloquia.
  • to arrange visits to the area of eminent mathematicians and organise inter-departmental visits and exchange visits.
  • to seek and maintain contacts with other mathematical associations within and outside the region, provided that the aims and purposes of such other associations are consistent with the aims and purposes of SAMSA.
  • to produce a research and information publication, and any other publications deemed to be of value in the promotion of the above aims.

Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA)

AMESA was founded in 1993 as the result of a unity process between nine previously divided Mathematics education organisations.
The aims of the Association are, in general, to promote Mathematics Education and, in particular, to enhance the quality of the teaching and learning of Mathematics in South Africa by:

  • Providing a forum for all concerned with the teaching of Mathematics at all levels of education;
  • Formulating policy statements on matters regarding Mathematics Education and promoting such perspectives among its members, policy-making bodies and organs in civil society involved in education;
  • Actively engaging in Mathematics Education projects that will result in the social, economic, political and cultural development of society;
  • Encouraging and assisting its members to strive towards a high standard of professionalism in the exercise of their profession.
