Lawyer

Lawyers can either be attorneys who dispense legal advice and handle a large variety of affairs for individuals, companies and associations or advocates, who specialise in various areas of the law, especially in the presentation of cases in court.


Available Qualifications:

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT GRADE 12 LEARNERS

  • Admission Points Score of 38.
  • Minimum NSC requirements for degree entry must be met.
  • English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa (home language or first additional language) on at least NSC level 5 (60-69%).
  • NSC achievement rating of at least 4 (50-59%) for Mathematics.
  • Applicants with an Admission Points Score between 30 and 37 may be referred to write the Access Assessment Battery before a decision is made on whether or not to admit the applicant to the course.

 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS WHO MATRICULATED PRIOR TO 2008

  • Matriculation exemption/endorsement.
  • Mathematics minimum pass mark of HG=E or SG=C.
  • Learners must score at least 31 points on the university’s SPS rating scale. 
  • Applicants who do not meet the requirements for direct admission, and who have an SPS of 18 or higher, may be referred to write the Access Assessment Battery before a decision is made on whether or not to admit the applicant to the course. 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRENT GRADE 12 LEARNERS

  • Minimum statutory NSC requirements for degree entry must be met. In exceptional cases however, candidates who only meet the minimum NSC requirements for diploma entry may be considered.
  • English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa (home language or first additional language) on at least level 5 (60 – 69 %).
  • NSC achievement rating of at least 4 (50-59%) for Mathematics or 7 (80-89%) for Mathematical Literacy.
  • Applicants with an Admission Points Score between 28 and 37 may be referred to write the Access Assessment Battery before a decision is made on whether or not to admit the applicant to the course.
  • Candidates must perform satisfactorily in the NMMU Access Assessment Battery.

Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates shall be admitted to the studies for the Master of Laws/Magister Legum Labour Law course work and research degree only if they

  • have obtained an average mark of at least 60% for the degree of Bachelor of Laws/Baccalaureus Legum or the equivalent thereof, or
  • have, in the opinion of Senate, attained through practical experience or otherwise a level of competence which is adequate for the purpose of postgraduate studies in Labour Law.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Unless Senate decides otherwise, candidates shall be admitted to studies for the degree of Doctor of Laws/Doctor Legum only if they

  • have obtained an average mark of at least 60% for the degree of Master of Laws/Magister Legum or the equivalent thereof, or
  • have, in the opinion of Senate, attained through practical experience or otherwise a level of competence which is adequate for the purpose of studies for the degree of Doctor of Laws/Doctor Legum.

  • have obtained an average mark of at least 60% for the degree of Master of Laws/Magister Legum or the equivalent thereof, or
  • have, in the opinion of Senate, attained through practical experience or otherwise a level of competence which is adequate for the purpose of studies for the degree of Doctor of Laws/Doctor Legum.
