Update: Student laptop support project

20/05/2020

The first batch of laptops to enable additional Mandela University students to continue their studies online during the lockdown period will be dispatched later this week.

The University expanded its Student Laptop project, successfully offered to NSFAS-funded students over the past two years, to give all students who do not have a suitable device the opportunity to opt into a loan or procurement agreement for a laptop.

This initiative supplements agreements with the major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to provide all Mandela University students with data bundles.

The first 1048 laptops to be distributed from this week will go to those students prioritised according to selection criteria agreed upon by a multi-functional team, including the Student Representative Council.

Recipients of the first readily available stock are mainly final-year, NSFAS-funded students.

The University has commenced with the procurement of additional laptops to meet the demand of those that opted in.  Those selected for the next batch of delivery will be notified and dates of delivery indicated in a separate communication. In the interim, these students and others who are not able to easily able to work remotely, are encouraged to continue with their studies along pathway 2.

The University is mindful of the many challenges presently being experienced by students, as it, and the entire higher education sector, continues to seek new ways of working to enable the continuation of the learning and teaching.
