4. Student Engagement Platforms to Promote Social Cohesion, Human Rights, and Respect
for Diversity
During the period under review, the Transformation Office set up various Facebook pages to address elements of gender-based
violence, equality promotion, and social inclusion, including sexual orientation. These online platforms are used to engage
students, employees, and the general public on contemporary issues related to the above themes. Advocacy, education
content, and other useful resources such as articles, videos, and links to other related sites form part of the content available
on these sites. Below are the links to the three sites:
• Amanda_MEMEZA page (image to left) has approximately
1 200 followers and contains content of the diary of
AmandaMEMEZA, a fictional story used as an educational
tool to raise awareness on GBV.

• The Mandela Equality and Social Inclusion page contains
content relating to fair and unfair discrimination.
Information relating to hate crime legislation and other
topical and relevant issues are posted on the page,
including advocacy materials developed by the
Transformation Office.

• The Mandela Pride page focuses on LGBTIQA+ issues
and provides an online space for employees, students,
and external stakeholders to engage on contemporary
issues affecting this community. Advocacy and educational
resources developed by the Transformation Office are
shared on this platform, including links to other relevant
resources.

5. Student Engagement Project
The interactions between students and prospective students plays a critical role in student recruitment. Operation Sangena
has annually been the flagship student programme supported by Student Recruitment in terms of planning, logistics, and
attendance. Operation Siyangena was established with Student Governance and supported by the former Vice-Chancellor
to service and share institutional information on a peer-to-peer basis. The purpose of this student-based organisation was to
service displaced and impoverished learners’ and provide them with access to additional information and resources.
